To celebrate their 10th anniversary, Jan Galega Brönnimann, Moussa Cissokho, and Omri Hason present their third CD, I Nia Yelle. In Mandinka, the language of an ethnic group in West Africa, this means: Open Your Eyes.
JMO is not only the initials of the three musicians Jan Galega Brönnimann, Moussa Cissokho, and Omri Hason, but also the three main influences on their music: Jazz, Mandinka, and the Orient.
Their first two CDs, “Al nge taa” and “Dandoula Tala,” were internationally acclaimed by the press and audience alike, are already in their third printing, and have sold over 5,000 copies. The music of JMO—Jan Galega Brönnimann (Switzerland), Moussa Cissokho (Senegal), and Omri Hason (Israel)—revives the art of storytelling. The sparklingly clear sound of the kora (a traditional African bridge harp with 22 strings) meets the sonorous, smoky tones of the bass clarinet and is supported by the various percussion instruments played by Omri Hason.
The interplay of Moussa Cissokho, Jan Galega Brönnimann, and Omri Hason captivates with beautiful melodies and rhythmic elegance. In their unforgettable live concerts, the three musicians oscillate between magically transfigured moments and rhythmically explosive flights of fancy. The result is authentic and contemporary chamber music.
The trio transcends boundaries between traditional and modern sounds from Africa, Europe, and the Orient. The repertoire is composed by all three musicians and showcases their diverse influences. The encounter of the three cultures, the choice of instruments, and the rich trove of ideas, melodies, and rhythms make the music an unforgettable listening adventure!
Influenced by the cultural heritage of West African griot songs, Moussa Cissokho sings about contemporary life in Africa and Europe. His lyrics deal with longing, mysterious rivers, and experiences at border controls in Europe. He belongs to the 42nd generation of the great Kora dynasty and griot family Cissokho, which has shaped the tradition of West African music for over 1000 years.
